Email - Apple Mail

Instructions for setting up GSE&IS IMAP with Apple Mail

 Choose your version of OSX for specific instructions. Check your OS version

Mac OSX 10.11

Mac OSX 10.10

Mac OSX 10.9

Mac OSX 10.8 or earlier

Mac OSX 10.11 

1. Open Apple Mail

2. At the top of the menu bar, select Mail and Preferences. In the right panel, select Add Other Mail Account and click Continue

3. On the Add a Mail Account screen, type in your name, address, and password. Click Create. You will see the message "Account must be manually configured." Click Sign In

4. You will see a screen with the error message: "Unable to verify account name or password." The fields with your previous settings will be populated. Add the following:

Incoming Mail Server: mail.gseis.ucla.edu

Outgoing Mail Server: mail.gseis.ucla.edu

Click Sign In.

5. Select the apps you want to use. Check the Mail box. The Notes application is optional. Click Done

Mac OSX 10.10

1. Open Apple Mail

2. At the top of the menu bar, select Mail and Preferences. In the right panel, select Add Other Mail Account and click Continue

3. On the Add a Mail Account screen, type in your name, address, and password. Click Create. You will see the message "Account must be manually configured." Click Next

4. On the "Incoming Mail Server Info" screen, enter the following:

Account Type: IMAP

Mail Server: mail.gseis.ucla.edu

Username: [your GSE&IS logon name (it is typically your email address before the @.gseis.ucla.edu)]

Password: [your GSE&IS password] 

Click Next. You will see the message: "Additional account information required." Click Next.

5. On the next 'Incoming Mail Server Info" screen, enter the following:

Path Prefix: [leave blank]

Port: 993 (check "Use SSL")

Authentication: Password

Click Next

6. On the "Outgoing Mail Server Info" screen, enter the following:

SMTP Server: zimbra.gseis.ucla.edu

Username: [your GSE&IS logon name]

Password: [your GSE&IS password]

Click Create. You will see the message: "Additional account information required." Click Next.

7. On the next "Outgoing Mail Server Info" screen, enter the following:

Port: 587 (check "Use SSL" box)

Authentication: Password

Click Create

8. Check each field in the account overview screen.

Mac OSX 10.9
 

  • Open Apple Mail.
  • At the top of the menu bar select Mail -> Preferences
  • Click the Accounts tab, and click the plus sign (+) along the bottom to add a new account.
  • Choose a Mail Account to Add.  Select "Add Other Mail Account" and click Continue.
  • Add a Mail Account.  Enter your full name, email address, and password.
  • Incoming Mail Server Info. You may or may not see this box.  If you do, make sure the port is 993, Use SSL is checked, and Authentication is Password.
  • Outgoing Mail Server Info. Enter mail.gseis.ucla.edu as the SMTP server and your username and password.
  • Another Outgoing Mail Server Info.   You may or may not see this box.  If you do, make sure the port is 587, Use SSL is checked, and Authentication is Password.  Click Create.
  • Without leaving Preferences, click on the account you just set up in the column on the left.
  • Click on the pop-up menu next to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) and select Edit SMTP Server List...
  • Click on Advanced.  Ensure that sure the port is 587, Use SSL is checked, and Authentication is Password.  For some versions of MacOS X the first option will be Automatically detect and maintain account settings.  It is very important that you UNCHECK this box.  (This will come up again in the next step)  Click OK.
  • Back at the Preferences box, click on Advanced.  Ensure that sure the port is 993, Use SSL is checked, and Authentication is Password.  For some versions of MacOS X the first option will be Automatically detect and maintain account settings.  It is very important that you UNCHECK this box.  Click OK.
  • Close the Preferences box and you are ready to go!

MacOS X 10.8 and earlier

  • Open Apple Mail
  • Click Mail, and select Preferences

  • Open the Accounts tab, and click the plus sign (+) along the bottom to add a new account.

  • Enter your name in the 'Full Name:' field.
  • Enter your GSEIS email address in the 'Email Address:' field.
  • Enter your GSEIS password in the 'Password:' field.
  • Then click Continue.
  • The Incoming Mail Server screen will appear
  • Complete the following:

  • Account Type: Change the dropdown menu to IMAP
  • Description: Enter GSEIS Mail
  • Incoming Mail Server: mail.gseis.ucla.edu
  • User Name: Enter your GSEIS email username. (e.g. jdoe)
  • Password: Enter your GSEIS email password.
  • Then click Continue. The Outgoing Mail Server screen will appear. Complete the following:

  • Description: GSEIS Mail
  • Outgoing Mail Server: mail.gseis.ucla.edu
  • Check Use Authentication.
  • Your account details should already be filled. If not, enter them.
  • Then click Continue.
  • Review the Account Summary screen and then click Create.
  • Once Mail has finished launching, go to the 'Mail' menu and choose 'Preferences...'
  • In the window that pops up, click on 'Accounts'. Then, making sure that the correct mail account is selected (usually in Blue) on the left side of the window, click on the 'Outgoing Mail Server' popup menu, and choose 'Edit SMTP Server List...'
  • Making sure that the correct mail account is selected at the top of the little window that pops up, click on the 'Advanced' tab at the bottom.
  • Select 'Use custom port', and type in 587. Confirm that 'Use Secure Sockets Layer' is checked, and that Authentication is set to 'Password'.
  • Then click 'OK', and close the window.
